Today, January 13, is Rubber Ducky’s birthday. Yes, I’m talking about Rubber Ducky, Ernie’s favorite, on Sesame Street. But, it shouldn’t stop us from celebrating Rubber Duckies everywhere. Usually we think of rubber ducks as a child’s bath-time toy, but it makes a whimsical decoration in the guest bathroom as well as a point of conversation.

These days you can find rubber ducks for just about every career or event. Consider that they aren’t always yellow either. Although, no one seems to know for sure who created the first rubber duck, it’s figured it must have been in the late 1800s with the invention of rubber. Although, the first ones were not make with the soft pliable rubber with internal squeakers, but out of a hard yellow plastic. Here are just a few of the themed rubber ducks:

* Bride and Groom
* Devil
* Sunglasses
* Camo
* Valentine
* Mardi Gras
* Chef
* Halloween
* Superhero
* Redneck
* Doctor
* Dentist
* Thanksgiving
* Pink Ribbon
* Happy Birthday
* Hockey
* Pirate
* Rock Star
* Construction Worker

An up and coming charity event is the “Rubber Duck Race.” The ducks are purchased, funds going to the charity, and a route is formed on a body of water where the first duck at the finish line wins. Pretty clever and fun. The Cincinnati rubber duck race benefiting the Freestore Foodbank is the largest one in the United States with over 100,000 ducks in the race.

Wouldn’t these rubber duckies make a great gift to take to your doctor or dentist. Perhaps put them on the top of a birthday gift as a wrapping decoration. Check Oriental Trading Company for a huge selection. Fun stuff!
