Oprah
I did something today that, actually, I’ve never done before. I checked out Oprah’s website. Actually, I’m not an Oprah fan. Shock, I know. I get the feeling that I’m the only one sometimes. Her “oh so holy attitude” gets to me most of the time. And even if she has an interesting guest on, I end up turning her off before the show is over. I especially get annoyed when she compares her raising her dogs to child rearing. Or when she says, “I don’t judge.” But, everything in her face and body language says - I’m judging.
Okay, so I thought, it’s been a while since I’ve even bothered to see what guests she has coming on her show. I’ll check out her site. The first thing that hit me was an excerpt of her Monday night to Oprah’s Soul Series. She wants us to join her online this Monday to hear her interview with Reverend Ed Bacon about why religious people can’t match up their religion with their spiritual growth. I like to think I’m a pretty open minded person. But, can’t we just answer this question in one sentence and skip the interview? The rules people make for themselves in the religious forum keep them from asking questions outside of the box out of fear mostly.
Next we see a box that is the search for Oprah’s “Smartest Most Talented Kids.” Actually, I did catch a bit of this last week when I saw a kid doing some pretty spectacular things with martial arts while blindfolded. It was impressive until he was done and Oprah said something about the fact that she loved smart, talented kids. I have two issues with this. First of all, there are already enough talent reality shows, really there are. And, what about the kids that don’t have especially great talents or aren’t especially smart. Actually, one of my “spiritual” beliefs has been that we are all given at least one major gift coming into this world. Sometimes it takes some work to find out what each child has to offer. But, you can be sure each one does have something special to offer, if others just take the time to help them discover it. So, why isn’t she doing a show on “Discovering Each Childs Great Gift?”
Okay, I’ve almost had enough of Oprah’s site, but decide to give it one more try. I already know that I haven’t liked any of the books I’ve picked up that were part of Oprah’s Book Club, so I’ll skip that section. No, I’ve had enough as I read her “Be On The Show” starters. “Is your daughter a Dakota Fanning fan?” “Looking for the Messiest Rooms in America.” “The Oprah Show is calling all men.” Enough, I’ve had enough.
